Patent Pending A perpendicular magnetic recording medium having at least a soft magnetic primary layer, a perpendicular magnetic recording layer and a protective layer, which are formed on a non-magnetic substrate, wherein the perpendicular magnetic recording layer comprises a principal recording layer, a non-magnetic intermediate layer and an auxiliary layer; said principal recording layer comprises magnetic crystalline particles and grain boundaries surrounding each magnetic crystalline particle, and is comprised of a material having a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.
