Patent Pending A base member is made of a material, such as SiC, which is more excellent in mechanical characteristics than silicon forming a semiconductor layer. The base member and the semiconductor layer are adhered to each other via an insulator layer. After adhesion, the semiconductor layer is mechanically separated from the base member to produce a SOI substrate.
