A process for t he production of carbides of Group 4A, 5A and 6A transition metals of the pe riodic table and/or double carbides of such transition metals and iron which comprises conducting solid-phase reaction of a ferroalloy containing a grou p 4A, 5A or 6A transition metal and unavoidable impurities with a carbonaceo us material comprising carbon as the main component by co-milling under vacu um or an inert gas atmosphere.
