The systems and methods are useful in the refrigerated, transport, storage/inventory, distribution, processing and packaging of fresh perishables (fish, meat, preservative free, fresh-cooked meals) with a focus on altering the natural gaseous environment around the perishables such that fresh shelf-life is extended for weeks and months without preservatives. The systems may also operate in a "clean-tech" power generation/power production mode, such that the fuel cells that maintain the MA/CA environment can also provide primary or back-up power.
