I would like to market a book publication before its actual publication date. Is the title of the book copyright-protected like the book itself or can it be considered a trademark? Could somebody use the title for unauthorized merchandising or other unlicensed business purposes?

Generally speaking, titles are not subject to copyright protection. One can register a movie title with the Writers Guild of America. If you intend on selling merchandise associated with the title, (book or movie) trademark may also be an option. If you contact me, I'll be happy to discuss this with you.
