Hello! We are a startup from Denver, Colorado. We are developing a mobile app connecting handheld users with exciting new entertainment opportunities tailored to the user's needs. In terms of raised funding and scale of operations, we have still a lot more potential to exploit.
I am wondering about the budget required to effectively protect your intellectual property. What is the price range of effective IP protection? Is it expensive to get patent protection? Or is a patent not the best option?

Well, you could treat your IP as a trade secret (as is the formula for Coca Cola) and that would cost you very little other than internal operational costs.
Alternatively, a patent generally requires an investment of about $25K from initial filing to actual issue, if granted by the USPTO. Then there are filings in international venues where you may want IP protection outside the US. These are all rough estimates and assumes you have no in-house IP attorneys.
