Hello everybody
I would be interested in if and how 3D Printing files are protected by intellectual property law. By such files I mean STL or OBJ files as shared by online 3D Printing platforms and communities such as Shapeways, Sculpteo, Thingiverse, Solify, i.makr, and others. Is the file as such subject to IP protection?

Copyright is the standard used for creative works, ownership usually resides with the CAD shape owner (or trademark if figurine) and the intermediate files would be ancillary works or temporary/transient copies. It would be like acquiring a proof copy of a manuscript and attempting to sell up book outlet. IP protection is thus necessary but as others (MPPA, MS, etc) have found, enforcement is a different kettle of fish.
