If a potential shareholder/co-founder has a patent that may be useful for the company, should I negotiate with them to assign the patent or a license to the company as part of becoming a shareholder?

It comes down to money. I would suggest if you can negotiate an exclusive license for a set time and duration and based upon contingent sales, that is the best route.****
