Guest Post by John Rizvi
Entrepreneurs and inventors,
Check out this viral video by criminal defense attorneys in California advising clients to remain silent (they actually are a bit more crude in their choice of language) if questioned by the police.
Although I practice patent law and know little about criminal defense, I believe there are valuable lessons in this video for inventors when it comes to making sure they don’t lose rights to their idea.
And…since I’m the Patent Professor, we’re going to be holding an impromptu class RIGHT NOW and I will share the lessons (with slightly cleaned up language) so you don’t EVER LOSE rights to your invention.
If you have not filed for a patent and someone asks you about your idea?
Shut Your Freaking Mouth.
If you are buying components for your prototype and someone asks what they are for?
Shut Your Freaking Mouth.
If an investor asks you to explain your concept before you have filed for a patent?
Shut Your Freaking Mouth.
The investor already HAS THE MONEY. Once you give him your un-protected idea, he doesn’t need you anymore. So what should you do?
Shut Your Freaking Mouth.
If someone wants to know about the new idea you are working on?
Shut Your Freaking Mouth.
After 2013, the United States Patent Laws have undone gone the biggest change ever….the law changed to a strict FIRST-TO-FILE system. Whoever files the patent first – WINS.
If you do not have your patent on file….what do you do?
Shut Your Freaking Mouth
Any questions?
Shut Your Freaking Mouth.
No, No, No! Just kidding.
If you have questions, call me at 1-877-Patent-Professor (1-877-728-7763). I am licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Anything we discuss is attorney-client privileged and confidential and I will be happy to advise on whether or not your idea constitutes patentable subject matter.
