The chemical nitroglycerin, which is commonly referred to as "glyceryl trinitrate" or "GTN" by the medical establishment to avoid alarming patients who associate nitroglycerin with explosions, is used to treat angina and heart failure. The mechanism of nitric oxide (NO) generation from GTN and the metabolic consequences of this bioactivation are still not entirely understood.
