Question
What steps have to be taken to register a patent in Europe? Is it important in which country I apply?

Assuming you have not already filed for patent rights in any other country, you should probably start with a patent search, and then file a patent application using the PCT process, which is cost effective for all the countries about which you care. Any competent PCT patent attorney, anywhere in the world, can help you with this.
