Question
I am developing a great online personal finance platform that provides comprehensive financial monitoring and planning, including insurance, debt, risk assessments, accounting, and projective advice on investments. The concept is based around an innovative use of AI/expert systems with the goal of providing financial advice similar to what a finance professional would provide. The project requires significant development effort, and I would like to know how to best protect my work. Can I get a patent for the software?

The answer is yes. Both software and business methods are patentable subject matter in the U.S. However, the U.S. patent laws are strict as to scope and coverage granted for such patents. It is becoming very difficult to receive a patent on a business method, and while the press may make it seem the same software patents, such is not the case. Patenting software is very much possible, as in the past. The strategies have changed over time though, and I'd recommend consulting a patent attorney.
