3D Printing industry - Returning to industrial services

Question

A recent Gartner study stipulates that the hype around consumer-oriented 3D Printing services has reached its peak. Many startups in the 3D Printing field have been focusing on consumers in a "3D Printing for the masses" sort of approach. This includes the continuing chain of 3D Printing Kickstarters as well as 3D Printing Hubs, retail services and so on.

I am wondering how a company can succesfully transform their business model from a consumer-oriented to an industry-oriented approach. I am aware that there is no single right answer, but would be very interested in hearing about your experiences.

Look at the PC industry. Dell didn't invent the computer but they managed to be the best at logistics and build to order. Industry want different set of services, post-sales support, consulting advice as to product lines, reliable supply of filaments, perhaps customisation. Trying to find a scalable model with a defensible revenue stream is half the fun (see how many PC enterprises collapsed after MS got big ... cf 3Dsystems).
