Geographic Indications?

Question

Hi! I have heard that many agricultural and food products in Europe, like Champaign from France or Blackforest Ham are protected under something called Geographic Indication. Does this work like a common trademark? Are the same products protected in the US? Could I, for instance, market US-made "German Bratwurst" in the US, or would this be false advertising or problematic in another way?

Geographical indications(GI) do not act like trademarks. it is to secure a special product having special features related to its geographical makings. The consumers whome to purchase this special product can see the GI sign or declaration on the pack or product itself to be sure that the product is really it. Example: You would like to purchase a " Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffe" and see a package saying "%100 Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffe" how can you be sure that it is really it. GI makes the registration owner to be able to secure the GI sign from hostile act, if the sign is seen, then it is real. it also secures consumers from buying wrong products of third parties. You can not adopt a GI right with this registration but the registration charges you to protect consumers and help them to reach real products.
