Question
I was offered a product manager's position at a startup. The company raised $70,000 in seed money (for 15%), and I was offered 5% of the company for 3 months of work (without pay). Is this fair?

They offer you shares that are currently worth 5% of $70k * 100/15, or about $23k. Is 3 months of your work worth less or more than $23k? If you would get less working for somebody else, it could be a good deal provided that you really believe that this is a cool company that has a good chance of being successful. Any doubts about the company or its CEO, run away even if you would earn less elsewhere.
