Hello,
Thank you so much for the helpful comments!
I would like to know how much the process of obtaining a trademark costs in both the U.S. and Japan. We (based in Germany) are looking to register a word mark in (probably) three classes.
Thank you!
Thomas

In the U.S., applications filed using the USPTO's TEAS+ form (basically utilizing pro forma classes and electronic correspondence) are $275/mark/class. Otherwise, it's $325/mark/class. These are just initial filing fees, however, and are exclusive of Statements of Use, Declarations, and renewals fees for which the USPTO will also charge.
Where a trademark attorney gets involved, and thus adds to the overall cost, is performing trademark clearance searches, providing recommendations based upon those searches, and corresponding with USPTO examiners in the event of an office action. This added cost can vary widely depending on the mark in question and what other marks may pose a conflict-hurdle to registration.
Thus, assuming you have a great mark, 3 * $275 = $825 in initial filing fees and probably less than $750 in search/correspondence legal work.
