Hiring student interns

Question

We (Sunnyvale, CA) would like to offer students an intership program where we would pay 1-2 interns roughly $2K a month, not necessarily indicating hours beforehand. Are there some legal barriers to this, or how exactly should we launch the internship program so that legal requirements for intern employment are alright?

Here is some information from the California Department of Labor on what to do as a new employer. Interns are a type of employee rather than an independent contractor so you need to make sure you're following the state law where you're located.
