Building music databases

Question

We are a building an exercise/health app that will include music and videos. To build a strong feature, we want to make as much music accessible as we can before launching the product. I would like to know what kind of legal strategies Soundcloud, Spotify & co used when they launched their platforms. I guess there are big copyright issues there, so how did these apps get off the ground?

Legitimate app platforms which are reproducing or distributing music and video are doing so pursuant to licensing agreements with content providers or their own licensees. The terms by which the app owners license / sublicense such content can vary wildly, but your first steps would be to contact the owners, publishers (ASCAP, BMI, etc.), or clearing houses of such desired content to determine those details. It would be prudent to consult an IP attorney in private to review your larger business and IP strategy before appropriating and/or using any content.
